Deseo de ideales calmantes

HB 516 [Carta a Sister Mariella Gable 4.05.63]
When they ask you to make Christianity look desirable, they are asking you to describe its essence, not what you see. Ideal Christianity doesn't exist, because anything the human being touches, even Christian truth, he deforms slightly in his own image. Even the saints do this. I take it to be the effects of original sin, and I notice that Catholics often act as if that doctrine is always perverted and always an indication of Calvinism. They read a little corruption as total corruption. The writer has to make the corruption believable before he can make the grace meaningful.
The tendency of people who ask questions like this is always towards the abstract and therefore toward allegory, thinness, and ultimately what they are looking for is an apologetic fiction. The best of them think: make it look desirable because it is desirable. The rest of them think: make it look desirable so I won't look like a fool for holding it. In a really Christian culture of real believers, this wouldn't come up.
