Aunque tarde

Pongo todo a tus pies, Dios, aunque tarde

(...) luego me casé
con una más que resultó ser tuya
no mía y no soporto ver tu nombre

I merely found myself one morning writing a description of two women that I knew something about, and before I realized it, I had equipped one of them with a daughter with a wooden leg. As the story progressed, I brought in the Bible salesman, but I had no idea of what I was doing to do with him. I didn't know he was going to steal the wooden leg until ten or twelve lines before he did it, but when I found out this was going to happen, I realized that it was inevitable (MM* 75).
MM = Mystery and Manners.

Carta a Betty Hester 4.05.57 [HB 218]
You don’t dream up a form and put the truth in it. The truth creates its own form. Form is necessity in the work of art. You know what you mean but you ain’t got the right words for it.
Carta a Betty Hester 18.05.57 [HB 219]
You don’t write a story because you have an idea but because you have a believable character or just simply because you have a story.
[Y a propósito de la palabra ‘dream’]: The last thing I would like to convince you of is that form is an absolute lying somewhere in an esoteric mist to which only the artist has access. Heavens no.

No escribir

I am going to end my lecture on the note that it is as noble not to write as to.

Best-sellers buenos y malos

Carta a Fr. J. H. McCown 9.05.56; HB 161:
[Her book] is just propaganda and its being propaganda for the side of the angels only makes it worse. The novel is an art form and when you use it for anything other than art, you pervert it. I didn’t make this up. I got it from St. Thomas (via Maritain) who allows that art is wholly concerned with the good of that which is made; it has no utilitarian end. If you manage to use it successfully for social, religious, or other purposes, it is because you make it art first...

HB 80-81 [Carta a Robie Macauley 18.05.55]
I certainly am glad you like the stories because now I feel it’s not bad that I like them so much. The truth is I like them better than anybody and I read them over and over and laugh and laugh, then get embarrassed when I remember I was the one wrote them.

The word beauty never crosses my lips.
La palabra belleza no cruza nunca mis labios.
*HB es The Habit of Being, claro.

Entrevista a Edward Mullany

(...) whereas Ayn Rand used art as a means by which to validate or propound the philosophy she was credited with developing (Objectivism), Flannery O'Connor never used art for anything, because she understood that a piece of art was most powerful when the meaning of that piece could not be divorced from (or articulated outside of) the piece itself without diminishing the effect.
(...) The reason she didn't allow it (and the reason, I would say, that O'Connor was the better artist, though not necessarily the better thinker or philosopher) is that she understood the role of artist to be a vocation, and was committed to remaining true to it to the exclusion of everything else. That her beliefs are not undermined by her work as an artist, but are, in fact, illustrated by it, is evidence of the unique place art occupies among human activities, and of O'Connor's great talent. When done right, art has a way of revealing an artist's convictions even when the artist is involved in the dramatization of scenes that outwardly have nothing to do with something so abstract as convictions. When not done right, it reveals no convictions, or—equally as bad—the convictions are so obvious to the reader that the dramatization seems artificial, contrived. (The latter is what many object to in Rand's work.)

Tres

2. Carta a Betty Hester sobre escribir artículos [28.12.56; HB 190]:
God and posterity are only served with well-made articles.
She lays about her right and left and has considerable erudition to back herself up with.
